Island Cruises

Description
Island Cruises provide Mediterranean cruises which stop off at some of the most famous and historical cities of Europe. The Ancient Odyssey cruise now stops at Athens, allowing passenger’s time to visit the many sights of this wonderful city which recently underwent huge renovations for the 2004 Olympic Games.

Athens, the beautiful capital of Greece, sits surrounded by mountains and is home to almost half the country's population. However, don’t let that put you off visiting one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world where there is plenty to see and do. Whether you are interested in the cities ancient historical monuments and artwork or have instead gone to sample the fine wines and food, there is something for everyone.
The most popular destination for tourists still remains the famous Parthenon temple. Situated on the Acropolis (meaning ‘high city’), this ancient ruin looks down over the city of Athens and is often praised as one of the greatest achievements of Greek architecture. However, there is great historical sightseeing both inside and out of Athens, with many museums and historical ruins in the surrounding countryside.
Cultural life in Athens is lively, catering for all tastes and cultures. One of the biggest draws is the Hellenic Festival in the summer months. Here you can enjoy spectacular Greek drama performances outdoors in the Herodes Atticus theatre. Alternatively, why not visit one of the many other romantic, open air garden cinemas or theatrical stages since Athens has more than any other city in all of Europe.
However, if all that sightseeing has worn you out then why not find somewhere to sit back, relax and enjoy the local cuisine. The central Psirri neighbourhood is the place to go for mainstream bars and live music restaurants; although this is crammed with people of all ages who wish to sing, dance and drink wine into the early hours.

If however, you’d prefer somewhere a bit quieter than visit Plaka. This old historical neighbourhood is made up of narrow labyrinth streets and is home to many tavernas and restaurants featuring traditional music and food. Here, eating is a relaxed and informal affair and you can enjoy Greek favourites such as Souvlaki (Skewered lamb) and Kleftiko (Slow baked lamb, marinated in garlic and lemon juice). As for drinks, Ouzo is a favourite often taken with your appetizer; however this aniseed flavoured spirit may not be to everyone’s tastes. Alternatively there is no shortage of Greek wines (which are sometimes served straight from the barrel!).

Certainly, after visiting Athens you will want to return to this wonderfully historic and lively city. Perhaps however, you would rather explore more of the country – with Island Cruises you can, offering stops at other historical Greek cities such as Santorini and Katakolon.
