Offa's Dyke Association

Description
Official site with details of the National Trail along the historic Offa's Dyke earthwork. Guides for walkers and hikers, with maps and details of accommodation. The website is managed by the UK registered charity 503821.
We are an independent voluntary organisation that provides information and other services to people who enjoy hiking and walking. We seek to promote and protect the 1200-year-old Offa's Dyke and the Offa's Dyke Path, a National Trail 177 miles long. We manage the Offa's Dyke Centre at Knighton and encourage archaeological and historical research relating to Offa's Dyke and the corridor along its length. Our invaluable Where To Stay guide is now online, but the printed booklet is still available for you to take with you on your walks. Offa's Dyke is a great frontier earthwork built by Offa, King of Mercia from 757 to 796 A.D. It gives its name to a long distance footpath, one of Britain's National Trails, which runs from Sedbury, near Chepstow, to Prestatyn through the varied and little-frequented landscapes of the Welsh Marches.

The Offa's Dyke Association was set up in 1969 to provide a link between walkers, historians and conservationists and those who live and work locally. All persons and organisations interested in the Welsh Border region are invited to join. Full membership is £14 a year: there are concessions for students, the unemployed, retired people, families and groups. Offa's Dyke Path, while not being the longest of the National Trails, is the most attractive and varied of them. The route crosses high wild moorland, attractive, well cultivated wide river valleys and ancient woodland. It passes through historic towns and isolated hamlets. En route can be seen hill forts, castles, abbeys and surviving remains of the habitations of former occupants of the beautiful corridor of the path. The flora and fauna are as rich and as varied as the scenery. At the halfway point in Knighton is the Offa's Dyke Centre with its Interactive Exhibition for the Dyke and a range of services for walkers.

The management of the fabric of the National Trail is co-ordinated by the Offa's Dyke Path Officer (not the Offa's Dyke Association). Nine local authorities work with the Offa's Dyke Path Officer to maintain Offa's Dyke Path in their respective areas.
